The work happens before the foundation

Watch her long enough and the pattern is unmistakable: an unusual proportion of the time goes on skin before any base appears. Massage, layering, waiting, letting something absorb before the next thing goes on top.

This is not indulgence and it is not content padding. Foundation sits differently on skin that has been worked than on skin that has been wiped and moisturised in thirty seconds — it grips where it should and slides where it should, and the difference is visible at two hours, not at ten minutes. Almost every complaint about a foundation is really a complaint about what was underneath it.

Texture is allowed to exist

Her finished skin has pores in it. That is a deliberate position against a decade of blurred, filtered, poreless base, and it is the more difficult thing to do — erasing texture is easy, keeping it while still evening the tone is not.

It is also what clients actually want when they say "natural", even though they will point at a filtered photograph while saying it. Part of the job is knowing that those two things are the same request.

Face Paint: The Story of Makeup is the best single book on where any of this came from — pigment, its sources, who was permitted to wear what, and how the rules changed. It is not a technique manual and it is more useful than most of them.

Knowing that kohl was medicinal before it was cosmetic, or how far back henna as adornment goes in this part of the world, changes how you talk to a client about a tradition she has grown up with. It stops being a trend you are applying and becomes something you understand the weight of.

The teaching, and why it is trusted

She was among the first artists at her level to publish serious technique free and in full, at a point when the profession still guarded it. Two decades on, the reason her word carries is simple: she has been consistently willing to say a product does not work, including products in categories she sells into. Trust is the highest-value thing an artist has, and it is only built by occasionally costing yourself money.
