Natural vs black henna

Henna is applied the day before, not on the morning, because it needs time to reach its true colour.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

Choose for the light it will be seen in, which is rarely the light you are standing in.

What actually decides it

Timing above everything. Applied on the day of the ceremony it photographs orange and pale; applied the night before it develops into the deep colour people expect.

Why black specifically. Black takes light away from underneath the face, so everything above it has to work slightly harder.

This is the one case where a stronger lip or eye is usually correct rather than excessive.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

The henna night is the one stage of a Moroccan wedding where the hands are photographed more than the face. Hands are prepared as part of the booking, and the face is built a step lighter so close-up hand frames stay balanced.

What it will not do

It cannot be rushed or corrected. Once applied, the design and the timing are fixed.
