Henna Night Makeup in Moulay Yacoub

Makeup for the henna ceremony, traditionally worn with the green caftan embroidered in gold.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

How long it takes

Around ninety minutes. It is a lighter build than the wedding night, deliberately.

What fails first, and how it is prevented

The henna night is the one stage of a Moroccan wedding where the hands are photographed more than the face. Hands are prepared as part of the booking rather than noticed on the day, and the face goes a step lighter — a heavy face above close-up hands unbalances every frame.

What Moulay Yacoub adds to it

Fès is the source of the lebssa fassiya, the ancestral costume of the city. It is built from silk and brocade with metallic gold and silver embroidery, in deep reds, emeralds and royal blues, and it is among the most heavily worked garments in the Moroccan sequence.

The metal question. Fassi work is gold-led, which sets the palette: bronzes, coppers and warm golds accord with it. A face built in cool taupes beside that embroidery reads as a mistake even to someone who cannot name why.

The climate. Inland and continental — hot, dry summers and genuinely cold winters. Dry heat pulls moisture out fast, so bases are layered over real hydration rather than applied straight onto bare skin.

Before the day

Henna itself must be applied the day before to reach its true colour. Applied on the morning it stays orange and pale in the photographs, so the night is planned backwards from that.

About four hours from Casablanca. An early call time usually means travelling the night before.
