Photoshoot Makeup in Ait Melloul

Makeup for a camera rather than for a room — editorial, campaign, portrait or content, at whatever distance the lens is working.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

How long it takes

Ninety minutes to two hours for the first look, then twenty to forty minutes per change depending on how the order is planned.

What fails first, and how it is prevented

Flashback. Light-reflecting particles — commonly silica, and SPF in a base or primer — are invisible in a mirror and blow out white under a flash. It is the single most common way a shoot is ruined, and it is only ever caught by testing under a flash beforehand.

What Ait Melloul adds to it

The Souss carries Amazigh dress: motifs and belts, handcrafted crowns and elaborate headdresses that frame the face, built from metalwork, textile wraps and beadwork. The headdress is a structural element rather than an accessory.

The metal question. Whatever the garment's metal is, the palette follows it — gold calls for warm bronzes and coppers, silver for cool greys and plums.

The climate. Warm, dry and coastal-Atlantic in Agadir, arid inland. A long, hot day rather than a humid one.

Before the day

No trial, but the lighting has to be known in advance. A face built for a beauty dish and a face built for window light on an overcast Casablanca morning are different builds, and changing the light means changing the face.

Agadir is roughly six to seven hours by road from Casablanca, or a short flight. Overnight is standard for a morning call.
