What actually decides it
How long it must last, what light it will be seen in, and whether it will be photographed. Answer those three before choosing anything.
The specific case of vacation. Start from the condition it has to survive — how long, in what light, photographed or not — and work backwards to the formula. Choosing the product first and hoping is what produces most of the failures.
