How to Prime Your Face

Primer is the handshake between skincare and makeup — it grips foundation, smooths what needs smoothing, and controls how your skin behaves under makeup for the rest of the day.
The catch: primer only works when it's chosen for your actual skin concern and paired correctly with your foundation. The wrong primer actively fights your base.
What you'll need
- A primer matched to your main concern (oil, pores, texture, dullness, or dryness)
- Clean fingertips
- Five minutes between skincare and primer
Step 1: Diagnose before you buy
Oily or shiny by midday: mattifying primer. Visible pores or texture: smoothing silicone primer. Dull or dry: luminous or hydrating primer. Redness: a green-tinted calming primer. One targeted primer beats three generic ones.
Step 2: Let skincare settle first
Apply moisturiser and SPF, then wait five minutes. Primer pressed onto wet skincare mixes with it and does neither job.
Step 3: Apply only where the concern lives
A pea-sized amount, pressed with fingertips onto the zone that needs it — usually the T-zone for oil, cheeks for pores, high points for glow. Full-face primer is rarely necessary.
Step 4: Press, don't rub
Pressing fills pores and fine lines; rubbing pushes product around and can ball it up.
Step 5: Pair it with a compatible foundation
Silicone primers under silicone-based foundations, water-based under water-based. If your foundation ever separates or pills, this mismatch is almost always why.
Step 6: Give it a minute
Sixty seconds of settling before foundation lets the primer form its grip layer. Then apply your base as usual.
Pro tips from the chair
- An eyeshadow primer on the lids is even more transformative than face primer — shadows double their lifespan and intensity.
- In hot months, a mattifying primer only through the T-zone keeps the rest of the face from looking flat.
- No primer? A thin layer of well-absorbed gel moisturiser is a decent hydrating stand-in — but nothing improvises oil control.

Is primer really necessary?
For short casual days, you can skip it. For long days, events, photos, oily skin, or textured skin, it visibly changes both the finish and the lifespan of makeup.
Why does my foundation pill over primer?
Either the skincare underneath wasn't absorbed, or the primer and foundation bases are incompatible (silicone vs water). Fix the wait time first, then the pairing.
