Dewy vs matte finish which to choose

The shade has to relate to your own colouring rather than to the name on the packaging.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

How to do it

  1. Judge the product against your own skin or lip in daylight.
  2. On deeper skin, choose pigment over prettiness in the pan — weak formulas disappear.
  3. Warm tones read on olive and deeper skin where cool taupes and greys read as dullness.
  4. Test before committing where possible.

The Moroccan adjustment

This is the single most repeated adjustment for a Moroccan clientele: the famous shades are formulated against a narrower range, and the local equivalent is usually warmer and deeper.

What goes wrong

Buying a shade because it is well known. Fame is not a match.
