How to Overdraw Lips

Overdrawing — lining just outside the natural lip edge — can add genuine visual volume when it's done with restraint. The moment it's visible, the illusion collapses.
The professional rule: cheat only in the centre, only by a millimetre or two, and let liner, gradient, and gloss do the rest of the work.
What you'll need
- A lip liner matching your lipstick (or one shade deeper)
- Lipstick and a touch of gloss
- Concealer on a small flat brush
Step 1: Blur your natural edge
Press a tiny amount of foundation or concealer over the lip line so the natural border softens. Overdrawing over a visible natural line always shows.
Step 2: Overdraw the centre only
Line a fraction outside the natural edge at the cupid's bow and the centre of the bottom lip. Return to the true lip line well before the corners — corners never lie.
Step 3: Shade the liner inward
Blend the liner into the lip so there's no hard boundary between liner and lipstick — a gradient reads as fullness; an outline reads as drawn-on.
Step 4: Fill with colour
Apply lipstick from the centre outward, stopping at your new drawn edge. Satin and cream finishes support the illusion better than flat matte, which shows edges.
Step 5: Highlight the 3D points
A dot of gloss in the centre of both lips, a touch of highlighter on the cupid's bow, and a whisper of concealer just under the bottom lip's centre — light does the final plumping.
Step 6: Sharpen the frame
Clean around the finished lip with concealer on a flat brush. A crisp border makes the new shape look native.
Pro tips from the chair
- Nude and MLBB (my-lips-but-better) shades hide overdrawing best; deep vampy shades expose every millimetre of cheating.
- Match the liner to the lipstick, not to your bare lip, when overdrawing — contrast at the edge is what gives the trick away.
- If you have naturally full lips, skip overdrawing and use the gradient technique instead — fullness is about light, not just size.
Frequently asked questions
How much can I overdraw before it shows?
One to two millimetres at the centre peaks, zero at the corners. Beyond that, lipstick sitting on flat skin catches light differently than lip texture and becomes visible in person, even if photos forgive it.
Why does my overdrawn lip disappear after eating?
Everything above the natural lip line has no lip texture to grip. Liner all over the overdrawn zone, blotted and re-applied, is the only real fix — and carry the liner for after meals.
