Lip care before lipstick

Because lipstick sits on the surface of the lip, and a flaking surface makes any colour look worse — matte most of all.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

How to do it

  1. Exfoliate gently a day or two before, not on the morning.
  2. Balm generously the night before.
  3. On the day, balm, wait, then blot it off completely before colour.
  4. Skip the exfoliation entirely if the lip is cracked — treat it first.

The Moroccan adjustment

Coastal wind and inland dry heat both strip lips fast in Morocco, which is why lip preparation before a wedding starts days ahead rather than on the morning.

What goes wrong

Balming immediately before lipstick. A slippery lip will not hold colour, and the lipstick slides into the corners within the hour.
