Makeup tips for dry skin

Dry skin needs oil and occlusion; the base should be cream or serum, and powder kept to almost nothing.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

How to do it

  1. Layer hydration and let each layer absorb fully before base.
  2. Choose a serum, cream or luminous liquid foundation — never powder.
  3. Apply with fingers or a damp sponge, pressing rather than dragging.
  4. Set the centre panel only, with the smallest amount of finely milled powder.
  5. Skip baking entirely.

The Moroccan adjustment

Inland Morocco in summer pulls moisture out fast, so dry skin needs layering rather than one rich cream. On the humid coast the same rich cream will make the base slide.

What goes wrong

Using powder to fix midday shine on dry skin. It is usually dehydration presenting as shine, and powder makes the next hour worse.
