How to Layer Makeup

Almost every makeup problem — pilling, patchiness, creasing, products disappearing by noon — is really a layering problem. Makeup is a stack of thin films, and each layer only works if the one beneath it is compatible and settled.
There is a professional order, and one golden rule inside it: water-based before oil-based, creams before powders. Once powder goes on, cream can't follow.
What you'll need
- Your usual skincare, base, colour, and setting products
- Ten unhurried minutes
- A damp sponge and clean brushes
Step 1: Skincare first, then patience
Moisturiser and SPF need five to ten minutes to absorb before primer. Makeup applied to wet skincare slides and pills — this pause is the most skipped and most important step.
Step 2: Primer, matched to your base
Silicone primers pair with silicone-heavy foundations; water-based primers with water-based formulas. Mismatched bases literally repel each other and separate on the skin.
Step 3: Colour correct, then foundation
Correctors go under foundation, thin and targeted. Foundation goes on in thin pressed layers, built only where needed.
Step 4: Concealer after foundation
Foundation erases most imperfections; concealer then handles only what remains — under-eyes and spots. This order halves the amount of concealer you need.
Step 5: All creams before any powder
Cream blush, cream bronzer, cream highlighter — all of them go on now, while the base is still unset. Once powder touches the face, cream products will grab and streak.
Step 6: Set, then powders, then spray
A light dusting of setting powder where needed, then powder blush/bronzer/highlight on top if you use them, brows and eyes and lips in any order — and a final mist of setting spray to fuse the whole stack.
Pro tips from the chair
- When in doubt, remember: thin-to-thick, water-to-oil, cream-to-powder. Any routine that follows those three gradients will layer cleanly.
- Eyes can come before base on dramatic looks — fallout cleanup is easier on bare skin.
- If a layer starts pilling, stop adding product: press a damp sponge over the area to fuse it, and continue with less.

Does the order really change the result?
Completely. The identical products in a different order produce visibly different results — layering is why two people with the same makeup bag get different finishes.
Where does sunscreen fit in?
SPF is the last skincare step, before primer. Never mix it into foundation and never dust powder directly onto fresh SPF — let it settle first.
