How to set makeup properly

Set only where the face moves, then finish with spray — powder first, spray second.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

How to do it

  1. Powder the centre panel: forehead, nose, chin, and under the eye if it creases.
  2. Leave the cheeks alone unless they genuinely shine.
  3. Mist setting spray from far enough that it lands as a veil rather than droplets.
  4. Let it dry without touching the face.

The Moroccan adjustment

Powder first then spray is the order research supports: powder stabilises by absorbing moisture, and the spray then binds the layers and melts visible powder texture.

What goes wrong

Setting the entire face. It guarantees texture by hour three and it is the single most common cause of makeup ageing a face.
