How to Apply Bronzer

Bronzer exists to give the skin back the warmth that foundation flattens out. It is not contour — contour creates shadow, bronzer creates sun.
Used well, bronzer makes skin look like it spent a weekend in Essaouira. Used badly, it turns orange and muddy. The difference is shade choice and placement.
What you'll need
- A matte or subtly satin bronzer one to two shades deeper than your skin
- A large, fluffy tapered brush
- A light hand
Step 1: Choose the right undertone
Golden and olive skin suits warm, golden bronzers. Fair skin needs a soft, neutral tan shade — anything too orange shows instantly. Deep skin can take rich amber and copper bronzers.
Step 2: Map the number 3
Sweep the bronzer in a '3' shape down each side of the face: forehead near the hairline, under the cheekbone, and along the jaw. This hits everywhere the sun naturally touches.
Step 3: Use a light, sweeping motion
Keep the brush moving — holding it in one spot deposits patches. Two light passes beat one heavy one.
Step 4: Warm the neck and ears
A face that is warmer than its neck looks like a mask. One light pass down the neck and over the ears ties everything together.
Step 5: Blend upward at the cheek
At the cheekbone, blend the bronzer up into the blush so the two melt together with no visible border.
Pro tips from the chair
- Matte bronzer sculpts; shimmer bronzer highlights. If you want both, apply matte first and tap shimmer only on the high points.
- Powder bronzer over powder-set skin, cream bronzer over unset foundation — mixing textures in the wrong order causes patchiness.
- For hooded or mature eyes, a whisper of bronzer in the crease doubles as a soft eyeshadow.
