How to Bake Makeup

Baking — pressing a generous layer of translucent powder onto the skin and letting body heat 'cook' it before dusting away — gives a completely creaseless, photograph-proof finish.
It is a technique from drag and stage makeup, and that is the caution: full-face baking looks heavy in daylight. Used precisely, in small zones, it is brilliant.
What you'll need
- Finely milled translucent powder
- A damp beauty sponge
- A fluffy brush for dusting off
Step 1: Start with a well-concealed base
Baking sets what is underneath — apply foundation and concealer first, and blend them perfectly. Powder locks in whatever texture exists, good or bad.
Step 2: Load powder with a damp sponge
Press a thick, visible layer of translucent powder under the eyes, on the smile lines, or wherever creasing happens. The damp sponge packs it densely.
Step 3: Let it sit for 5–10 minutes
Body heat melts the layers beneath while the powder holds everything still. Do your eyebrows or lips while you wait.
Step 4: Dust away thoroughly
Sweep off every trace of excess with a clean fluffy brush, working outward. What remains is a sealed, matte, crease-proof zone.
Step 5: Rehydrate the finish
One mist of setting spray takes away the dry, powdery cast and leaves the area looking like set skin rather than powder.
Pro tips from the chair
- Bake only where makeup creases: under the eyes, the chin, the sides of the nose. Cheekbones and forehead rarely need it.
- On dry or mature skin, shorten the bake to two minutes and use a hydrating spray after — or skip baking entirely in favour of a light powder press.
- White baking powders photograph with flashback; choose truly translucent or skin-toned powder for events with photography.

Is baking necessary for everyday makeup?
No — it is an occasion technique. For daily wear, a single pressed layer of powder under the eyes achieves 80% of the effect with none of the weight.
Why does my under-eye look grey after baking?
Either the powder has a white cast or it sat too long on a thin concealer layer. Use a peach-toned powder under the eyes and shorten the bake.
