How to Do Ombre Lips

The ombré lip — deeper at the edges, lighter at the centre — makes lips look fuller and softer than any single flat colour can, and it forgives imperfect application beautifully.
It's a staple of both K-beauty (the blurred 'gradient lip') and classic glam (liner-and-nude). One technique, two moods.
What you'll need
- A lip liner or lipstick in a deeper shade
- A lighter lipstick or gloss for the centre
- A lip brush or fingertip for the blend
Step 1: Prep and blot
Smooth, balm-prepped lips blend gradients cleanly. Blot excess balm before starting so the colours have grip.
Step 2: Frame with the deeper shade
Line the outer edges of both lips and shade inward slightly, leaving the centre bare. Concentrate depth at the corners — that's what creates dimension.
Step 3: Drop the light shade in the centre
Apply the lighter lipstick or a nude gloss only to the middle of both lips, straight from the bullet or with a brush.
Step 4: Blend where they meet
Press your fingertip or a brush along the boundary in small taps until the two shades merge with no visible line. Pressing keeps the gradient; smearing flattens it.
Step 5: Choose your finish
For K-beauty blur: blot once and press a tiny bit of powder at the edges. For glam: add a touch more gloss in the centre for a 3D pout.

- Classic pairings: berry edges with pink centre, brown edges with caramel centre, red edges with orange centre for editorial looks.
- The gradient hides uneven lip pigmentation better than any full-coverage lipstick.
- A tiny dot of concealer at the corners before you start makes the dark frame look razor-sharp.
