Concealer vs Camouflage Cream: When You Need the Heavy Stuff

Most people reach for more concealer when what they actually need is a completely different category of product. Here is where the line sits.

The test

Ask one question: is this a shadow, or is it a colour?

A shadow — under-eye darkness, the hollow beside the nose — is a lighting problem, and concealer brightens it. A colour — an indigo tattoo, a red scar, a brown patch of melasma — is a pigment problem, and no amount of skin-tone product will neutralise it. That needs correcting first and covering second.

Piling on more concealer to fix a colour is the most common wasted effort in makeup.

Correct, then cover, then set

  1. Identify the colour of the problem, not just that it is dark.
  2. Cancel it with its opposite, at the right depth for the skin. Orange or red under blue-toned tattoos and bruising; green under angry red.
  3. Mix your match on the back of the hand — two or three shades, never one straight from the pan.
  4. Press, do not buff. Buffing removes what you just placed.
  5. Powder firmly, wait a minute, dust the excess off.
  6. For a very long day, a second thin layer over the set first layer beats one thick layer.

The Moroccan case: traditional tattoos and stubborn henna

Amazigh chin, hand and forearm tattoos are indigo-blue and decades old. Some brides want them shown — they are heritage. Some want them covered for a particular look or a particular family. Both are the client’s call.

If they are being covered: orange or red correction first, then a mixed skin match, then firm powder. Skin tone alone reads grey-green over indigo, every time.

Henna that has gone darker than planned, or strayed onto the forearm, is the same job with a warmer correction.

The verdict

Concealer for shadows. Camouflage cream for colours. If you have ever put four layers of concealer on something and watched it still show through, you needed the other category.

Questions

Can concealer cover a tattoo?

Not properly. A tattoo is a pigment problem, so it needs colour correction first and a maximum-coverage camouflage cream second. Concealer alone will read grey-green.

Is camouflage cream available in Morocco?

Not reliably — Kryolan Dermacolor has no verified Moroccan distributor. Working artists import it. It is one of the very few things genuinely worth importing.

How do I stop camouflage cream transferring?

Powder it thoroughly and leave it a full minute before dusting the excess off. Under-powdering is the only reason properly applied camouflage transfers.

Knowing how is one thing. Ninety minutes on the morning is another
