The one rule that prevents every patchy result
Cream before powder. Always.
Powder absorbs the liquid part of whatever it touches. Put powder down first and the cream you apply on top has nothing to spread through — so it grabs unevenly, sits in patches and refuses to blend.
Cream base, cream bronzer, cream blush — then powder over all of it, then powder products on top. Patchy bronzer and blotchy blush disappear the day you start doing this.
Layering both for a very long night
The most durable way to wear colour is both, in order: cream first, set, then the same colour family in powder over the top. The cream anchors it; the powder locks it. It survives a Moroccan wedding in a way either alone does not.
Choosing by the day you are having
- Casablanca, August, coastal — cream bronzer (powder patches over a damp base), powder set on the T-zone.
- Marrakech, dry heat — cream everything, minimal powder. Powder cracks on dehydrated skin.
- Flash photography — cream, lightly set. Heavy powder reads dry under flash.
- Oily skin, twelve-hour event — blurring powder before the base, cream colour, powder to set, blotting spray for touch-ups.
- Mature skin — cream, almost exclusively. Powder settles into texture and ages the face in photographs.
The verdict
Cream for dry, mature and photographed. Powder for oily and humid. When in doubt: cream first, powder to set only the centre panel. That sequence works on almost everyone.
