Henna Night Makeup and Hair

What actually happens

Held a day or two before the wedding. The bride wears green — the colour of paradise — and henna is applied to her hands and feet in intricate work that can take hours. There is singing, there is dancing, and the family stays very late.

Two practical consequences. The bride will be seated with her hands immobilised for a long stretch, so anything she needs to reach must be handed to her. And it is the longest continuous wear of the whole week.

The makeup brief

Warmer and more saturated than the wedding day. The room is lit gold, the caftan is green, and the jewellery is heavy — a soft neutral look disappears entirely in that setting.

• Base: fuller coverage than the daytime, matte-leaning. #FauxFilter suits the saturation of the night.
• Eyes: the one night for real colour — warm bronzes, greens that answer the caftan, deep kohl. Do the eyes before the base.
• Cheek: warm and generous. Cream bronzer with fingers, then a developed blush.

• Lock: heavier than you would for a shorter event. This night runs longest.

The hair brief

Hair is usually dressed but not fully bridal — the full formality is saved for the amariya. A soft dressed-back style, a low chignon, or loose waves with a jewelled headband or a light taj.

The practical constraint is the henna itself. Once her hands are done she cannot touch her hair for hours, so anything that needs adjusting during the night must be secured properly at the start. Pin more than you think, and use a strong hold at the hairline where dancing will lift it.

Timing and what goes wrong

• Allow 60–75 minutes. It is quicker than the wedding day but not by much.
• Do the eyes first. Saturated colour will fall onto a finished base and you will redo it.
• Do not use cool-toned highlighter in a room lit entirely gold.
• Under-setting is the classic failure — the night runs longer than the ceremony and nobody plans for it.
• Leave her a blotting spray she can use without touching her face, and show her how before the henna goes on.
