How to Spot Fake Makeup in Morocco
Counterfeit prestige makeup is everywhere in this market, and the fakes have got good. Here is what actually distinguishes them — checks you can do on your phone before you hand over the money.
Why Morocco has a counterfeit problem
Prestige brands are in genuine demand here and genuinely under-distributed. Most of them have no official Moroccan store, no local customer service and no authorised-retailer list that a shopper can check. That gap is exactly where counterfeits live — and because the real products mostly arrive through importers anyway, 'imported' is not a red flag on its own.
Check the batch code first
Every legitimate cosmetic carries a batch code stamped or printed on the base or the crimp of the tube. Not a sticker — stamped into the packaging. The YSL compacts in this kit read !AZN2E and FXA31E; the NARS Laguna jar carries the full manufacturing address and an 18M symbol.
If there is no batch code, or the code is on a peel-off label, or the same code appears on every unit in the shop, walk away. Free online batch-code checkers will decode most brands and tell you the manufacture date.
Read the legally required text
Real packaging carries things counterfeiters get lazy about: net weight in both grams and ounces, country of manufacture, the full distributor address, and the period-after-opening symbol (the open jar with 12M, 18M or 24M).
The Rare Beauty compacts here print Dist. By/Par Rare Beauty, LLC, El Segundo, CA 90245 and the EU and UK responsible-person addresses. Fakes usually have some of this and not all of it, or have it in a font that is slightly wrong.
Price is the loudest signal
Charlotte Tilbury's cream bronzer sells for 600 MAD in Morocco. Hourglass Vanish is 630. Dior Backstage is 521. If someone offers you any of these at 150 MAD, the question is not whether it is fake. Discounts of 20–30 % are normal; discounts of 70 % are not.
Buy from a channel that can be held responsible
Palmarosa Shop is an officially authorised NYX reseller — that is a relationship the brand can revoke, which gives them a reason to stay clean. Dior sells directly at shop-beauty.dior.ma. Yan&One and Faces are large enough that their supply chain is auditable.
Instagram sellers and personal shoppers are not necessarily dishonest, but there is no recourse if the product is wrong, and no way to verify where it came from.
Signs on the product itself
- Smell. Counterfeits often smell of solvent or of nothing at all. Real formulas have a consistent, subtle scent.
- Texture. Fake pressed powder is chalky and hard; it skids under a brush instead of releasing pigment.
- The pump. Real foundation pumps dispense a consistent dose. Fakes spit, over-dispense or clog.
- Print quality. Look at the smallest text on the base under a phone camera zoom. Blurred or pixelated edges mean it was printed from a scan.
- Weight. A real compact has heft. Fakes use thinner plastic and feel obviously lighter.

Questions
Are imported products automatically fake?
No. Almost all prestige makeup in Morocco is imported, because most brands have no official local store. Imported is normal; unverifiable is the problem.
Can a counterfeit actually harm my skin?
Yes. Counterfeit cosmetics have been found to contain bacteria, heavy metals and unlisted preservatives, because there is no regulated manufacturing behind them. This is a health question, not just a value one.
What is a period-after-opening symbol?
The small open-jar icon with a number and an M — 12M, 18M, 24M. It tells you how many months the product stays safe after you first open it. The Rare Beauty highlighters here are 12M, NARS Laguna is 18M, YSL blush is 24M.
