Brows
The product rule for dark hair on olive skin, and why most brow advice is written for the wrong face.
Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.
Almost every brow guide online is built around a Western template — thin the tail, lift the arch, aim for a shape suited to a narrower brow bone and finer, lighter hair. Applied without adjustment to the brows common in Morocco, it works against the face.
The brows here are usually already strong: dense, dark, naturally defined. That is the asset, and the standard advice asks you to remove it.
Match the product to the skin, not to the hair
A pencil chosen to match dark hair exactly reads as a hard black line against olive skin. One shade lighter than the hair, in a warm rather than cool brown, is the pairing that reads as hair rather than as drawing.
Cool-toned brow products are the other common error: they go grey against olive and deeper skin.
Dense dark hair shows every removal
On fair, fine hair a slightly over-plucked line is forgiving. On dense dark hair against olive skin the contrast is high enough that a two-hair error is visible in daylight.
Work in smaller passes than any tutorial suggests, and stop earlier than feels finished. Over-plucked brows do not reliably grow back.
Threading, and timing before a wedding
Threading removes a whole line at once rather than hair by hair, which suits dense growth, and it is gentler on skin that pigments easily — waxing on such skin can leave a mark that outlasts the shape.
Brows should be done at least three days before a wedding, never on the morning. Freshly threaded skin stays pink for hours and no base covers it convincingly under flash.

Questions
What brow shade suits dark hair and olive skin?
One shade lighter than the hair, in a warm rather than cool brown. Matched exactly to dark hair, brow product reads as a hard line rather than as hair.
Pencil, pomade or gel?
Pencil for hair-like strokes and everyday wear. Pomade for hold through heat and a long event, applied by building rather than filling. Gel to set the hair itself, over either.
How long before a wedding should brows be done?
At least three days. Freshly threaded or waxed skin stays pink for hours, and no base covers that convincingly under a photographer's flash.
