Blush
Blush is the product that makes a face look alive rather than finished. Skipping it is why a lot of otherwise flawless makeup looks like a mask.
What does blush actually do, and where does it go?
Foundation removes colour from the face by design. Blush puts it back. Without it, even a perfect base reads as flat and slightly dead, particularly in photographs.
Placement changes the shape of a face more than most people expect. Higher on the cheekbone lifts; on the apple it reads youthful and round; swept toward the temple it lengthens.
How to use it, step by step
- Blush goes after bronzer and before highlighter.
- Load the brush, tap it off, place the first pass slightly higher than feels right — it always settles lower under camera flash.
- Smile to find the apple, but apply slightly above and blend back toward the ear.
- Build in three light passes with a daylight check between each.
- A whisper across the nose bridge and the tops of the ears ties the whole face together.
The mistakes that cost you
- Applying to an unset cream base, so the powder grabs and blotches.
- Judging the intensity in artificial light.
- Stopping at the cheek — the nose and ears make it look natural rather than applied.
