Festival Makeup

Colour, glitter and graphic elements, built for daylight and movement.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

Where it sits

Editorial.

Editorial sits outside the natural-to-glam scale entirely. It serves a concept and a camera, and it is judged on whether the picture works rather than on whether the wearer looks like herself.

The technique it depends on

Adhesion. Everything decorative needs a proper base or it migrates within the hour.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

Heat and glitter are a poor combination; expect migration and place it accordingly.

Underneath all of it: most Moroccan skin runs olive or golden, so cool taupes and greyed tones read as dullness rather than depth. Warm bronze, copper and terracotta do the work instead.

When it is the wrong choice

Anything photographed formally afterwards.
