Grunge Makeup
A deliberately undone, smudged, dark-led look.
Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.
Where it sits
Editorial.
Editorial sits outside the natural-to-glam scale entirely. It serves a concept and a camera, and it is judged on whether the picture works rather than on whether the wearer looks like herself.
The technique it depends on
Placed imperfection. A smudge that reads as intentional has a specific edge; an accidental one looks like a mistake.
On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate
Dark smudge needs real pigment on deeper skin, or it reads as tiredness rather than as intent.
The constant here is temperature. A cool-toned palette on olive skin does not read as sophisticated, it reads as grey — and the substitution is warm bronze, copper or terracotta.
When it is the wrong choice
Formal photography.
