Mermaid Makeup

An iridescent look built on scales, blues and greens, and high shine.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

Where it sits

Editorial.

Editorial sits outside the natural-to-glam scale entirely. It serves a concept and a camera, and it is judged on whether the picture works rather than on whether the wearer looks like herself.

The technique it depends on

The iridescence — flat colour will not carry it.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

Cool blues and greens need real saturation against warm skin or they turn muddy.

In coastal humidity, set in thin successive passes rather than one heavy layer. Accumulated product slides; product laid down thinly stays. Inland the problem inverts and dryness decides instead.

When it is the wrong choice

Anything long-wearing.
