Editorial rather than glam.

Graphic Liner

A liner shape that reads as drawn rather than as definition — floating lines, extended wings, shapes off the lash line.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

Where it sits

Editorial rather than glam.

Editorial sits outside the natural-to-glam scale entirely. It serves a concept and a camera, and it is judged on whether the picture works rather than on whether the wearer looks like herself.

The technique it depends on

Precision of a single edge. There is nothing to hide behind.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

Needs a primed lid in Moroccan heat, or the line transfers into the crease within hours.

The constant here is temperature. A cool-toned palette on olive skin does not read as sophisticated, it reads as grey — and the substitution is warm bronze, copper or terracotta.

When it is the wrong choice

A fourteen-hour wedding, unless set very carefully.
