Eyeshadow

Colour and shadow on the lid, used to shape the eye as much as to decorate it.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca. Part of the Eyes: Shadow, Liner, Mascara & Lashes guide.

When to use it

After eye primer and base, before liner in most looks.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

Cool taupes and greyed browns — the backbone of most imported neutral palettes — largely disappear on deeper skin. Bronze, copper and warm gold read.

The rule that runs through every product on this site: check undertone, not just depth. Most Moroccan skin is olive or golden, and a neutral or pink-based product greys within the hour however precisely the depth matches. And for any long event, set in thin successive passes rather than one heavy layer — accumulated product slides in coastal humidity, while product laid down thinly stays.

What it will not do

Fixing a heavy or tired eye on its own. Shape comes from placement, not colour.

The most common mistake

Skipping the transition shade because it looks like it does nothing. It is doing everything.
