Soft to editorial.

Monochromatic Makeup

One colour family carried across eye, cheek and lip.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca.

Where it sits

Soft to editorial.

Editorial sits outside the natural-to-glam scale entirely. It serves a concept and a camera, and it is judged on whether the picture works rather than on whether the wearer looks like herself.

The technique it depends on

Shade relationship. The three placements must be genuinely the same family.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

Warm families — terracotta, bronze, brick — work across the widest range of local skin tones.

Underneath all of it: most Moroccan skin runs olive or golden, so cool taupes and greyed tones read as dullness rather than depth. Warm bronze, copper and terracotta do the work instead.

When it is the wrong choice

Nothing categorically.
