Cushion foundation

A liquid base in a sponge-loaded compact, applied with a puff.

Written by Lamyaa Aissi, professional makeup artist, Casablanca. Part of the Foundation & Base guide.

When to use it

For touch-ups through a long day and for building sheer layers quickly without brushes.

On Moroccan skin, in a Moroccan climate

Genuinely useful in a handbag during a Moroccan wedding, where reapplication happens in a room with no mirror worth using.

The rule that runs through every product on this site: check undertone, not just depth. Most Moroccan skin is olive or golden, and a neutral or pink-based product greys within the hour however precisely the depth matches. And for any long event, set in thin successive passes rather than one heavy layer — accumulated product slides in coastal humidity, while product laid down thinly stays.

What it will not do

Shade range. Cushion ranges are usually short, which makes them a poor bet for the deeper half of the spectrum.

The most common mistake

Pressing rather than tapping. Pressing pushes product into pores; tapping deposits it on top of the skin.
